The reason why this anime is titled “Angel of Darkness” just escapes me. There are no angels, good-spirited or otherwise. The “darkness” elements are more of biological freaks than mere supernatural lackeys. I guess I should take Angel of Darkness with as much seriousness that I took Can Can Bunny, which neither had bunnies nor Can Can dancers.

What to say about Angel of Darkness, aside from my fascination of watching monsters fight against other monsters… Well, there isn’t one single story thread, except for a volume or two that are related to other volumes. All the horrific incidents of rape and mass female torture, which loony school faculty and their unrealistic ambitions instigate, are all ensconced in some nightmare campus. In this aspect, Angel of Darkness becomes similar to Imma Youjo; there is only one common feature that binds all unconnected circumstances (like the Maya incarnates of Imma Youjo). Each chapter can stand alone, which is a good thing.

The artwork quality varies with every episode, but the animation and the fluidity of movement is generally maintained throughout. The last few volumes seem to have highly improved, both in art and story. The character design can even be described as exquisite. The ecchi scenes are nothing out of the ordinary, and aren’t as detailed as most h-fans would’ve wanted them to be, but they sure give a complete new meaning to the phrase “sex every five minutes”.

Angelium is a rather cute little hentai affair, delving into the world of Greek mythology.
Apparently Zeus is having a mid life crisis and really wants to get it on with every hot lil angel way up there in heaven. But since he is under the ever watchful eye of his wife Hera, he’s not having much luck. My advice to save him a lot of pain and misery is just shell out the cash for a shiny red sports car instead, especially since Hera is a mighty fine looking lady herself. Anyway, with no clue in mind as to Zeus’s ulterior motives, three sweet innocent angels are sent down to earth to pass the test of becoming fully fledged angels by doing good for as much of mankind as possible.

The art and animation are, across the board, simply great, the colors are lush and vibrant. The detail is also very well up to the standards of recent hentai releases. It’s just plain shiny and pretty, with beautiful character designs.

This is a show you’d find pretty safe watching with your girlfriend; no whips or chains, no ugly old fat men having their way with anyone. Although I should point out there are a few tentacle scenes held within. However, they are minor and also brief and really aren’t there for the purpose of violation, but more for restraint. They’re very laughable tentacle monsters as they look like angry purple fanged vaginas, which were not at all terrifying. Of course, I’m sure if I run into one down a darkened alley at night, I might end up changing my tune.

A small surprise held inside is that the English dub actually wasn’t terrible. In fact it did add to the comedic nature of the show. The voice of the little winged cherub made me laugh a few times as it kept mispronouncing Hera’s name as Fella.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…SPORTS HENTAI! Yes, Hentai Wonderland has loads seen stories of rape, bondage, tentacle fests, the occasional half assed fantasy RPG backdrop and even *gasp* romance every now and then. However, sports hentai is somewhat new to me. Angels in the Court scored immediate points with me due to its unique premise. Its subsequent evaluation was only boosted by a genuinely funny and light-hearted story and dialog and by excellent and attractive overall visuals. However, Angels in the Court failed to meet expectations in one department…one word (or a combo word if you will): SOFTCORE.

Because this is, when all is said and done, anime porn, potential buyers of Angels in the Court must first understand they will not be getting a very sexually explicit title. You won’t be seeing all the “tasty” details that uh, well…ah hell, lets just say the camera forgets to focus between the legs. That said, for soft-core, the sex content is actually quite good. Vigorous humping and fondling nicely complement a variety of situations and attractive female partners. Folks, if you’ve ever wondered about the possibilities that those sound proof karaoke singing rooms present, this hentai will give you a few tantalizing ideas.

Speaking of the women, the character designs in Angels of the Court consistently rate high. Characters are cleanly drawn, and attractive right down to the male lead, Coach Motoura. Each of the players has a distinctive look and personality that, while perhaps not deep or multifaceted, at least helps with the notion that they are not there merely for jiggling and moaning. The transfer student especially has an interesting plight…I’ll just say she needs the proper “motivation” to play to her outstanding capability.

My main character complaint would be with Coach Motoura’s sometimes overboard dedication to getting off, which in some instances put the team welfare at risk. That and his rather lecherous relationship with his players bugged me somewhat, but this is after all hentai. In all truth, it’s kinda hard to blame the guy, when he’s surrounded by a team of young (on no!), willing and beautiful girls. Come to think of it, he actually did try to refuse them…for all of three seconds, yes, but it was there nonetheless. What a guy!

To sum up my opinion of Angels in the Court, it was an entertaining romp through the light-hearted side of um…college…girl’s volleyball competition. If you choose to buy it, as long as you are not expecting explicitly detailed sex, you will more likely than not be satisfied. And perhaps, like this reviewer, somewhat envious of ol’ Coach. *sigh* Must change career goals…

Akira Motoura, the former All-Japan ace, commands the volleyball team of AOTA Academy. He has a hard time adjusting to the team members who have many varied characteristics. He believes that students, these days, develop sexually at an extremely young age and very quickly. He is fascinated with the girls during the games. He gets sexually aroused watching them play. He is constantly having nasty fantasies but he does not regret it, for he is a man and a man has sexual desires.

This anime did not hit me right. Why? It said in the cover to be uncensored. Is it? Of course not. If you are willing to spend $40 to get the 2 DVDs, you will know why. Enough of ranting of the hentai level and time for me to move on to another aspect.

The leading male character Akira Motoura is a buff looking guy who got all the female attention in the anime from the very beginning till the end. This guy has an unending sexual appetite for a coach. There are 2 leading female character, Nanase and Nao. Nao is the leader of the team and Nanase is a “good” player that also works as assistant coach. I shall not deliberate more on how “good” Nanase in the court.

The voice acting is good. The storyline is basically competing other volleyball teams for a title. The graphics are good overall.

If you desperately want to watch this title, get a couple of your friends that like hentai, buy it, and decide who should claim ownership on this title.
