Lust is 9 issues of Twilight Zone experiences. Some stories are tragic, some just filled with cynicism. But most importantly, it’s a journey to the supernatural, wherein supernatural isn’t defined by otherworldly encounters, but rather a journey of the mind. Must be the psychologist in me that got excited in trying to understand what goes on in the author Tenjiku Ronin’s head. Somehow, I can’t shake the feeling that many of these stories have deeper symbolic meanings. Like a sensory perception trick wherein your brain struggles for a moment as it tries to makes sense out of a confusing scenario, but ends up accepting the way things are (whether logical or not).

One particular volume that I really appreciated for its depth was Cages (volumes 5 and 6), because how the mind defies the body is played out so well, providing an insight to the beasts and beauties inside all of us. This is not to say that the other stories aren’t as good. In fact, all of them impart an eye-opening atmosphere that makes one wonder about endless possibilities.

The sex is graphic. Very graphic. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend this title to somebody who hasn’t been exposed to other forms of hentai material. But what’s awe-inspiring about Lust is how Tenjiku Ronin’s surrealistic artwork and light brush strokes makes eroticism a dreamy experience.

There are so many animals in the forest with very imaginative…err…fantasies. Whoever did this manga (his pen name is “Kondom”, no-da!) sure had a lot of time in his hands. You have all sorts of education ranging from zoology (bugs, rodents, and all!) to human anatomy. It’s like a hentai National Geographic magazine, with two pweetty weetle fairies doing the commentaries—and the action. The dialogues are a bit…unnerving. I don’t know, there’s just something wrong with it, like I’m reading something that should’ve been published before my dad was born. On the other hand, the graphic language can’t be that old. Then again, what kind of lines would you expect from bugs, rodents and whatnot?

The stories are so trite, they got me in tears as I laughed my butt off. No, they’re not funny, but the attempt at humor is. Gotta give ‘em plus points for trying.

If you notice, I keep on using elipses here. It’s just that my head is throbbing (literally—bad cold/fever) and I’m trying to find the right words to describe this reading material. What else is there to say? Ah, yes… How graphic the hentai scenes are? Very graphic. Would you believe the little critters could actually have penises that resemble that of a full-grown human male??? And from someone who goes by the alias Kondom, you would at least expect that he would promote safe sex. Go figure.

Uh, but I really must ask, “Is this legal???”

Don’t be deceived by the slavery themes that abound this manga. There is more to the women here that meets the eye. In fact, if one would observe closely, one would notice that unlike most female “slaves” we see in hentai flicks, the girls here actually have brains. So they feel like calling some insecure males “master”. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. They can actually be feisty, eloquent, and yes, they do have a sense of humor. Like for instance, in Virtual Master, Akiko and Yue suggest naughtily that their master pretend to be a girl. They obviously get a kick from his appalled reaction. Perhaps they just didn’t want him to tag along their newest experiment? What I could actually see is a woman’s power of manipulation at work in most of the events. Trust a really powerful female to pretend to have the underhand in relationships such as these, when they actually do have the upper hand.

What’s also nice about this collection is that there are a lot of romance and really sweet, albeit bizarre, situations. This aspect is portrayed well in Tennis Balls and Pink Dawn, the last two chapters of the manga. Both stories deal with hidden desires, crushes, and even love in its twisted form. They also start out with one partner being subjected to “serving” the other, but then later end up with the couples switching positions, so to speak.

A Wet Night, Ties That Bind, and Vice Versa are not as remarkable as the three stories that I have previously mentioned, but Suehirogari’s humor and flair for minimalist, but beautiful artwork, are never lost. Ties That Bind, however, has an incestuous theme, so the feel is quite different. The hentai frames of this English release (by Eros) have been redrawn and uncensored by Suehirogari himself, but the there really isn’t much detail. Oh, you can still see how deep each penetration goes, if we’re going to talk perversion and ecchi-ness here. Still, if you weigh this particular manga against those thick Japanese hentai magazines with multiple stories, like Comic Gemikan, Suehirogari’s work seems mild in comparison. This is not a bad thing, though, because it adds to Sexhibition’s bittersweet and surrealistic atmosphere. One could only wish that there would be more hentai manga such as this. Truly, it puts the word “decadence” in a different light.

Renowned hentai mangaka Hiroyuki Utatane and wife Ryo Ramiya, also a hentai (doujinshi) mangaka, must have a very interesting err…sex life, if Utatane’s vividly imaginative works could possibly be a reflection of his bedroom activities. In Temptation, you’d see a wide variety of themes and atmosphere from being hilarious (Alimony Hunter), to eccentric (Mirror), and to downright creepy (Crimson). Frames that depict homosexual (both gay and lesbian) intercourse, as well as those transsexual in nature are featured in such a manner that could issue a wake-up call to anyone in the throes of lethargy. The most shocking experience, however, can be felt from Crimson, where you’d find yourself wondering if you’re right in the middle of a nightmare. Read: blood, Oedipus complex, and bodily fetishes all rolled into one. And here I thought looking away was an evasive tactic I could only use in watching videos.

What makes Temptation special, though, is that all of these are highlighted by one of the most detailed artwork you will ever see in hentai print media—a trademark of Hiroyuki Utatane. He never skimps on the details, so for those of you who haven’t cured your homophobia and shudder at the thought of somebody shoving his best friend down your posterior, it might be wise for me to issue a warning note beforehand. After the three-chapter reading, you are introduced to various erotic pin-ups that are rendered so expertly they can only be considered true works of art. Now, that’s what I call rewarding.

If you’ve seen the animated Countdown series, you’d easily appreciate its print form. Alimony Hunter came out in Countdown, whilst Mirror was animated in Countdown Akira. The only catch is that you’d have to read Utatane’s other works, because what I have seen in Countdown Akira (the anime) is not completely shown here. In fact, most of the stories inside Temptation have that nasty habit of leaving you hanging over the edge. But it’s a good investment anyway, especially for a hentai title. Anything Hiroyuki Utatane is a recommended collector’s item. Just make sure you know how to take care of your mental health, and you’ll be safe.

This was one of the times where I just couldn’t care less about the story. Some of the situations are completely absurd (Alice just goes down on everyone they meet, sometimes without saying a single word!), but the coolness of the art and sex make this a must-buy.

There are few male characters here, so the girls make up for it with some magic pills that turn them into dickgirls. Most of the scenes feature one or two (or three) dickgirls, which means lots of double penetrations and anal sex! Drool…

Look for the one “real” (in the sense it was born with the extra equipment) dickgirl that will appear far into the story. Her dick not only is huge, it also has a big lump in it, like a dog!
