The main character, Kaoru, is an ordinary nice college student who runs into Aoi, a girl was engaged to him at a very young age. Aoi’s character is the kind who dreams only about being a wife, living to serve the man she loves. As an independent type of woman myself, characters like this usually really irritate me — but the series does a good job in portraying this as the choice that Aoi has made herself, and her love for Kaoru is so true that her subservient personality become her virtue, and not her flaw.
The first disc of this series is the best, with a lot awkward but romantic tension, tenderness, and a few adorably ecchi moments as it focuses on Kaoru and Aoi. Unfortunately, the series fails to retain this exact same mood as it progresses and introduces more characters — even though they are funny and interesting. This is causes just a small bit of frustration for the viewer because now the focus is spread on the development on the other characters, and so the viewer finds himself constantly pining for Kaoru and Aoi to get more time alone together…probably just as much as the characters themselves!
This is the series that got me hooked on anime romances, and that finally made me decide that “harem” situations can indeed be potentially entertaining. The artwork was beautifully done and the soundtrack sets the mood perfectly. All of the characters and their completely different personalities, the way each girl demonstrates her feelings for Kaoru and the way he handles it, provides lots of smiles, aww’s, and just overall mushy-sweet goodness. If you don’t mind a romance story with a “harem”-like sub-theme and can get over a submissive heroine, then I recommend giving this sweet series a shot. |
