Man against nature plus something more >>> firesenshi (09.01.2001)
When you think the original concept is about nature and the sea dwellers against humanity, you'll be in for a big surprise. As for me, I wasn't disappointed when I learned the reasons. And don't worry. This isn't your typical world domination theme. An anime that has a thorough and justifiable reason for survival just adds depth to the whole thing. I don't know why, but watching it reminds me of the movie Island of Dr. Moreau. But as backdrop, you'll be treated with great scenes in underwater combat. The anime employs what is famous in Japan today, called animetronix, wherein computer graphics are fused with the animation. It looks, though, that in some scenes, the CGs need a lot of work. But overall, the details in the submarine and other ships looked fine to me because they enhanced the battles. Hold on to your seat as each torpedo is launched, or when there are chases underwater.
What is lacking here though is that while the concept has depth, there seems to be a lot of unanswered questions in the end. Well, you won't be left hanging. The problem was concluded in the end. But you wonder what happened to the supposed villains you knew in the beginning of the story. You wonder why it was resolved this way. Hnn... maybe that was the intention, ne?
