My favorite release >>> skysenshi (09.18.2001)

This was the series that introduced me to the world of Tenchi Muyo. Of all the different versions, storylines, and characterizations of the Tenchi series, I think this OAV tops in both plot and design. It has a detailed explanation of origins and sub scenarios, which are quite different from that of the TV series. Here you'll find intricacies in every characters relation to another. Fans of the original series might even be surprised to find that in this installation, some of our cast are even siblings or the finished product of one of Washu's wacky experiments.

My favorite is actually Ryoko. I like her best in this series because she exhibits a vulnerable side that is hardly ever present in the other versions. She's almost human, and isn't half as annoying as the Ryoko of the TV series or of Shin Tenchi Muyo ( Tenchi in Tokyo ). Yosho, Tenchi's grandfather, is another matter entirely. Here, he isn't the old bag shadow of his former handsome self. He is every bit the Jurai royalty who is known for his strength and magnificence.

Like all other Tenchi shows, this OAV exhibits a great deal of wit and humor that sometimes borders on the ridiculous, which isn't a bad thing actually. In fact, while the same formula that has made Tenchi such a hit is applied, there is a certain touch of maturity here that carries the series to another level.
