From Game Reviewer to Game Dev: The Struggle

I have had this site since I was a student in 1997, back when the Otaku Fridge was still hosted at GeoCities. It has launched my career in web development and eventually helped me get into the game development industry. I have written so many game reviews that are more detailed than my anime or manga reviews. You may have noticed, however, that I haven't been reviewing anything for the past few months.

I still could write game reviews when I became a game writer/tester and eventually a producer because the producer job entailed making sure all the developers were delivering on time while keeping the budget in check. Thing is, the longer I spent in the game industry, the harder it became for me to write reviews.

And that became even more difficult when I decided to go indie and become a developer myself. I look back at all the reviews I have written and I wonder how many developers' morale I have crushed with my words. Let's break it down into smaller, chewable pieces:

1. We already know our games' flaws before reviewers even mention them.
We learn a lot in video game studies and game design classes. We know all the design principles. We have testers to tell us what's wrong with our designs. Thing is, the implementation is not as easy as it looks. I've spent a lot of sleepless nights trying to make conflicting features work with each other and yet frustratingly fail about 60% of the time. Which leads us to cut some features out or we'd never get the game shipped. Sometimes, we only learn how to fix conflicts in the next iteration, the next game project. So yes, we know what reviewers want to say and we'd like to do it the way most reviewers say we should. Truth is, we can't always.

Many of us don't want to end up like these devs, whom I'm guessing have worn themselves out.

The Otaku Fridge Boards...Revived? Har har!

Wow. After more than a year, I've actually "revived" the boards! Well, in spirit, that is. Because this is a totally new platform. I just don't know if it's going to be utilized as much as it had been a few years ago. I'm not really hoping much.

I'm just happy that I have something up even if it's a bit primitive compared to the old Ikonboard or Invisionboard. A lot of the original categories have also been removed because they no longer are applicable to our new setup so this would be much much much lighter. Hopefully, the effort would be appreciated, haha! (Even if there are times when the layout/design completely disappears sometimes and I get disoriented. I'm also still trying to figure out how to remove my blasted face off each forum category without having to remove my avatar. Sorry about that. I wish there was something better I can do. EDIT: Ok, that face thing was fixed. Nabble has an awesome support team!)

So, without further ado...WELCOME TO THE OTAKU FRIDGE BOARDS!!!
(Translation: Please populate it now. =^.^=)
Click here to access the boards.
Or simply use the right-hand navigation of this site to find the link.
Or, for the older members, you can still access it via the original URL: http://ob.otakufridge.com

UPDATE 04.17.2010:
The video games section has now been completely recovered. Yay. Took me a while to finish that. Gosh, really lots of old school games in there. @_@ Many of them are collectors' items now. I can't believe that some of them actually cost about $200 now on Amazon.com! Who buys these oldies at that price?? Some of the platforms aren't even being sold on the market anymore. If I take too long in the anime section, I'd probably go and recover the "mature" ("delicate"?) side of the Fridge first...

Actually…those are the last of the manga entries that we recovered from the old Fridge. I'll try to complete the video game list next time. Operative word: TRY. As for the anime section…it's just too large, I think I'm going to die if I tried completing all of that in one day.

AAAAND…About those "disappearing" reviews…
Blogger just decided to make navigation a little bit harder for you so don't be shocked if you find only 18 titles listed under "Anime", "Video Games" etc. You're supposed to click the "Show Older Posts" thingy so you can see the rest of the titles that are there. So no…our reviews (the ones we've recovered, at least) have not gone missing. You just need to do a few more clicks in order to get to them. So sorry about that!

This is one of those times I regret downgrading from Wordpress, but I shouldn't complain. I'm still a Google Girl (everything I do online, I do with Google, from paper work to emailing to watching videos to photo sharing to collaborating etc.). I just think that maybe Blogger is like the weakest link in the chain right now. But I have VERY HIGH hopes they will improve. They are, after all, part of Google and I'm always rooting for Google peeps. They always try to make the world a better place. That and I love the fact that they recently came up with an easier way to fix your templates. (I just am not using it.)

UPDATE 04.15.2010:
Was able to fix it by Frankensteining (GreenLava's code and my clone of The Blog Doctor's pipe). I thought it wouldn't work, but it did. Whew!

Otaku Fridge 2010

Didn't think it would come to this again, but this site has just moved homes. I began transfer in November of 2009, although it’s quite a slow, arduous process. Hey, I’m only one person working on migration (this sorta makes me think things were much easier when I was just FTPing HTML files instead of switching databases).

New layout, new server (Blogger, which I had been using for my Portfolio since 2005), and maybe a new life? The Otaku Fridge began with GeoCities and now it ends with…Google. At least for 2010. I hope this is the last database migration I’ll ever have to do. It’s exhausting!

Many of you will probably ask why I'm doing this yet again when I haven't been able to finish the initial migration from HTML to Wordpress for Otaku Fridge 2007.  Well, much as I loved tweaking the Wordpress content management system and testing its limits, it seems I have been remiss in tweaking the limits of my own wallet. 2009 was a year of life-altering events: Michael Jackson's untimely demise (plus Francis Magalona's, Cory Aquino's, David Carradine's, Patrick Swayze's, Farrah Fawcett's and Brittany Murphy's T.T), Typhoon Ondoy submerging so many of our cities, and the political unrest surrounding the fear that we'll once again be under Martial Law. I never imagined I could actually spend thousands of pesos on people (typhoon victims) that I am not related to and if you think about it, spending so much money on a hobby (maintaining my sites) seems suddenly trivial. So, as you can see, I'm finding a new home in a less sophisticated platform.  I feel like I've downgraded, technology-wise.  Still, the important thing remains: Blogger is free. Not to mention, it's in sync with the rest of my favorite Google applications.

You'll also notice that the adult anime section has been taken out of this site AGAIN.  It's just like having HN back, except I don't own the domain now. Heh.  My reasons for the separation is explained fully here.

2010, huh.  We're actually gearing towards the Otaku Fridge's 13th year and thinking about it now, this site actually launched my real career: from an anime fan with a passion for creating fan shrines, to a web designer, to a game developer, to a college professor (specializing in information design and game development), to a college's Assistant Director, and finally to someone who contributes to the animation and game development curricula of all schools under the Philippine Commission on Higher Education. That was quite a long leap from the simple teen-aged hobbyist I once was.  I may not be updating this site on a regular basis anymore, but it holds a special place in my heart. It not only helped me reach deep inside myself in order to extract my potentials but it also helped me reach out to those who dream of becoming animators and game designers/developers in the future.

So in ending 2009, I present you with its last review: Bleach Movie 1 - Memories of Nobody. Enjoy...while I whip up my first review for 2010. (That is, after I finish 4 PhD papers due next week.)

Written December 14, 2009 (edited December 31, 2009), for release on January 1, 2010.

Pulling the plug on the Otaku Boards

Many factors have made me decide to pull the plug on the message boards:
  1. The increase in billing.
  2. Bandwidth allocation decrease. If you notice, the boards only go up for half a month before it goes beyond the new bandwidth allocation limit.
  3. None of us are that active anymore due to the fact that we're no longer college students with lots of time in our hands.

I was supposed to put the boards up one more time so I could archive it but the account has already been suspended. I'm not willing to pay for something that's only up half the month. What I can do, however, is post this so that you guys who've had plans could still communicate via this post.

I may have another message boards, or maybe a Multiply account for the former members... I'll think of something. I can't do something about the lost content anymore, though. In the meantime, you guys get each other's information while you can.

Happy 2009! =^.^=

Wow. The Otaku Fridge is going 12 years in May, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that this would be a good year, not only for me but also for all my visitors. (The boards are still on weird status but I still haven't gotten around to figuring out what to do with it.)

First things first, another artist for our muse. The artist is Jedidiah Dumawal, a former student of mine. Very talented. So talented, in fact, that he had been called "Panginoong Jed" (Lord Jed) by the Asia Pacific College's upperclassmen and lower batches alike. He drew the sleeping neko-chan six months ago, right after his graduation, but it took me this long to post it. Remember that the neko-chan is based on me? Well, I procrastinated for so long that those bangs actually grew out. -_-;;; (My hair is still partially highlighted with reds, though.)

Why a sleeping neko-chan? Hm. 2008 deprived me of sleep. So I want to have more of that in 2009. Hehehe.

I'm sorry that I have been sloooooow to update. There's always something in my schedule, ne? This time it's Ph.D studies. And the usual, which is work. I'm training future game developers so I suppose all is not lost. I'm actually loving my work so much that I tend to neglect the other important things. Like partying. Heh. Or watching anime, something I haven't done since last summer. This is why I'm loving my Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. I don't have to go home and plug 'em in so I can play. I bring them with me on trips and when I'm waiting for something at work. If my PSP had bigger memory, maybe then I can watch anime more often.

In any case, I'll try to update as often as I can. I even started the new year with two reviews. One positive and one negative. Both are Final Fantasy games on portable consoles:

A third review, for another Ivalice Alliance tactics game on the DS, is coming up but I'm enjoying the game so much that I don't even want to think about getting to the ending. Clocked in over 100 hours during the holidays and I just can't stop exploring. Of course, now that the holiday is almost over (I start work again tomorrow, darn), the gaming might slow down. Other plans for the Fridge this 2009 include adding a new section for J-Dorama and Live Action. I'm currently watching Galileo.

But I enjoyed Christmas and New Year and I hope everyone did, too. I'm wishing you guys the best that 2009 has to offer.

Again, happy 2009, everyone! Enjoy!

End of the Boards(?)

I have just received a notice from the Invision Power Team that they will be increasing the rates for the forum hosting. It’s almost double the original rate that I have been paying since 2001. As I haven’t been on the Otaku Fridge Boards for quite some time, I have already begun to think of letting it go.

If anyone else has a solution, please don’t hesitate to comment on this entry. We only have until May 25. I will be downloading the database, for posterity’s sake, but since we won’t be using Invision anymore, we’ll probably have a new forum or another venue for discussion.

Until then!

Backlogs for First Quarter of 2008

Sorry for the delay in updates. I am looking for a new place to stay. The current one I'm living in is so far from my work that my brain goes dry by the time I get home. (Only have time to sleep before I wake up at 4AM actually. I manage to squeeze in the anime and video games during my short breaks.) In any case, I am supposed to be working on the following titles:

  • Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (game in progress)
Notes: So many things to explore that there are times when I just get tired. The sub quests are killing me. Also, I've always hated those flying Medusa heads, since the very first Castlevania back in the Family Computer (NES) days.
  • Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings (game in progress)
Notes: Wonky dual screen usage. I hate the controls. It's like the makers couldn't decide whether to create a tactics game or an RPG. I know there have been games like these...but they have been presented on a BIGGER screen and navigation isn't such a bitch. If you're not careful with this one, the battle ground might turn into one big confusing mess.
  • Death Note (done watching, review in progress)
Notes: Plot holes galore! But it's so addictive, that I couldn't stop plopping DVDs into my player until I was done with the series.
  • Hana Kimi Manga (done reading)
Notes: Butterflies in my stomach. 'Nuff said.
  • Crying Freeman Manga (still reading)
Notes: My gawd, this story can get hilarious sometimes. I can see now that the anime was very loyal to the manga...even the parts that have gotten waaay too ridiculous.

I'll start writing again once I'm settled in. I'm still out hunting apartments during free days. I hope I find it before I also start taking my entrance exams for my Ph.D. Wish me luck!

Fanfiction Archive Back Up!

So sorry I wasn’t able to update for this week. Was supposed to write manga reviews for Crying Freeman (this is much more graphic than its anime rendition) and Hana Kimi.
Y’see, I had been working on reviving the fanfiction archive, which has always been one of my favorite sections of this site… well, actually, it used to be part of Hentai Neko and only featured mature fics. This time around, I’ve installed security measures for those who are underage. I’ve also included new kid-friendly categories.
Just to list the new features available:
  • New layout (in accordance with the Otaku Fridge’s theme for 2007)
  • New categories
  • Anti-bot filters
  • Ability to challenge another fic author with your own fic
  • Collaborations
  • More editing powers for authors (you can delete undesirable reviews)
  • And so much more…I get confused with the features already
Some of the sections are still being debugged (like new author registrations can’t be processed yet and the index page is rather skewed) so please bear with me.
Anyhoo, I lead you to the new fanfiction archive:

Should I feature other Japanese products and snacks, too?

Since I'm still in the middle of finishing a series, it would be quite difficult for me to come up with a fresh review this week. But I noticed that my other site contains other Japanese products ranging from snacks to cosmetics to J-Pop music. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to review my favorites like Pocari Sweat (super life saver, if you ask me!), Shu Uemura (which I already reviewed at Coolay), green tea bars (yum!), and artists like Hiraku Utada and Ayumi Hamasaki (both also covered space at Skysenshi.com).

Anyway, if it pushes through, I'd like to start with Pocari Sweat, of course. But only if you guys want to see that in here and are too lazy to visit another site for it. I am so in love with that drink, I can't help but sing it praises.

Registration Closed

After a whole month of beta testing, we’ve decided to close the registration process. We found out that a lot of people will try to abuse the system, which is kind of funny because spammers and dubious usernames are automatically filtered by the site anyway. From now on, only people who have been approved as Contributors will be registered into the site.

Non-contributing readers are still welcome to comment on the articles and reviews, of course. Your thoughts and ideas are always welcome. You can register on the boards, if you want to talk to other users. ^^

As for spammers, well, I still get a kick out of the attempts since I’ve seen really creative ones captured by the filter. Once in a while I approve a spam comment through, mostly because some can be quite amusing.

Oh and…I’d like to thank the spammers who attempted (and utterly failed) to fill the site with garbage. Without you, we would never have found out how adorably tough our filters are. =^.^=

Bringing back the ROARS

When I still used to run Hentai Neko, one of the most visited sections of the site was “Hear Me Roar.” It was a section that contained all my general opinions about hentai and the fandom in general. I would get letters from various other feminists and sympathizers and I’ve corresponded with the most intelligent of them.

When I sold HN, I had to struggle with the decision of including the roars in the new Otaku Fridge. Some of the articles aren’t very relevant to what the Otaku Fridge has become, although many still explain what kind of community we’re running here and what kind of a reviewer I am. I’m keeping about four of the articles and I am archiving them, the rest…will forever remain in my hard drive. They’re a reminder of what I was when I started and what I have become now. (While I still get major goosebumps over Yuki Yoshihara’s highly romantic erotic manga, sadly, the licensed hentai materials are still predominantly male-oriented and repetitive. I’m still on the lookout for the good stuff, though…hentai or not…)

The articles I’m keeping online will now simply be…articles. I don’t roar anymore. Except, perhaps, if a particular title (hentai or otherwise) disgusts me. Life’s too short for negativities (and quarrels that stem from differences). I’m cultivating a more open-minded atmosphere, where differences in opinions shouldn’t keep the members of this community from being friends. By that, I mean, let’s all happily disagree if we are to disagree. (I’d still kick you in the nuts if you dig rape and you go anywhere near me, though.)

If you want to re-visit the articles or you’re someone new, just click on this link.

UPDATE November 8, 2009 at 19:24: Since the site has yet again been transferred, I'm pasting some of the old comments in the comments section of this post.

Obligatory 10th Anniversary Post =^.^=

I built the Otaku Fridge, my very first website, on May 18, 1997. Back then, it was a collection of mini-shrines that talked about anime, video games, music, and food by a group of Senshi cousins. It was originally called The Kitchen Raiders' Refrigerator. The long name was inspired by the fact that my cousins and I used to hang out at Icesenshi's house to watch anime and raid her fridges (I think it's the reason why my aunt bought three of 'em giant coolers). As each of us grew up and diversified so did the site, which resulted in many spin-offs. Now it's back to what it used to be, albeit focusing entirely on love for Japanese entertainment.

My celebration of the Fridge's 10th anniversary (yes, we're 10 years old!) is two months late, but I'm hoping I'm not too late. As you can see, there are many changes that this site is undergoing. Namely:

Incorporation of Hentai Reviews
With Hentai Neko having been sold in early 2007, I'm putting my old and future hentai reviews into this site. Honestly, I don't have the stomach to watch hentai anymore (it had made me fear sex...literally!) but I will try to be as broadminded as I can. The good thing about the new interface, though, is that I can cut what appears on the index page so children will be spared from having to immediately see something they're not supposed to.

Database Driving
With Web 2.0 leaving a blazing trail, we're already moving ahead. I just wish I had gotten off my butt back in the 90s and migrated everything into a database before it had grown into such gargantuan proportions. As of this writing, I still have over 700 titles to convert from static HTML to dynamic PHP. That's not my priority, however. My priority is getting freshly written material up and running in minutes. My priority is making editing and posting a breeze. This is why I still kept the classic Otaku Fridge up -- for those people who are looking for old material that may not have been converted yet.

User Empowerment
I'm hoping to rebuild the community within these walls so that people could comment on the articles, write reviews themselves or post news about the fandom. Of course, the official Otaku Fridge articles are still the ones posted by the Administrators, Editors and Authors but at least now, the posting process is much faster and more convenient. Screening up and coming reviewers is also much easier now.

A New Home
As most of you will know, I have a history of switching hosts for like...every two years. The reason for this is that every other host starts to slack off when it comes to support after a year or so. There was only one that didn't slack off, mostly because I didn't need support in the first place (everything was in their control panel, even account cancellations). I just happened to have outgrown that host's best plan. The host that came after that (the last one I had), on the other hand, had stopped answering support questions. None of the other companies they own would acknowledge my emails, which is a shame because they just automatically charged my credit card last January. This time around, I've opted to go to somebody I REALLY KNOW. That somebody is someone I could bug nearly everyday, since we both work in the same place. He's a great teacher, so amazingly geeky, and always ready to help. Thanks, Father Bob! (Take a look at his hosting plans, if you're curious. Hehe.)

An Old Muse, A New Artist
Before I forget, I wish to shower my utmost gratitude to our very own Nib. He's the artist behind our muse's new look. Those who were avid fans of Hentai Neko will remember Neko-chan and that she's based on yours truly. Why? To quote myself (December 31, 2005): "Why am I the model? Well, I am the chief writer. It would be weird to put someone else's face on my writing, ne? I just figured that it would be nice to have the webmistress' icon watch over the site. =^.^=" Since HN has been sold, Neko-chan is now donning more conservative clothes...and I very much want to cover up that cleavage. If it weren't blasphemous to the gorgeous artwork, that is. Anyway, Nib and I are now planning for the next few poses, which would have her wearing clothes that I actually wear in real life. (The purple booby-buster currently displayed on our masthead is something you can only make me wear when I'm dead drunk and unconscious. Fat chance of that happening. Hehe.)

[INSERT NEKO-CHAN HERE]I'm sorry that it took this long. I was finishing my master's (graduated last May 2007) while juggling various responsibilities, but I intend to finish the main kinks from the Otaku Fridge before I embark on a new journey towards a doctorate degree. I remember that I was a college student when I first began the Fridge, and it's been there when I got my first paycheck, when I shifted careers from a packaging company's account officer to a web developer to a virtual marketing consultant to a voice actress to a digital ink-and-painter to a game developer to an information architect to a lecturer... It was my therapy for troubled times and has helped me help other people. These last ten years have been the best so far.

I hope you enjoy the transition as much as I did working on it.

About The Fridge

The Otaku Fridge was originally a network of anime-gaming related sites started by the Senshi cousins. It was first built by Skysenshi on May 18 of 1997 and initially hosted at GeoCities. It had a series of name changes from the Kitchen Raiders Refrigerator, to the Kitchen Raiders Otaku Vault, to the Kitchen Raiders Otaku Fridge, to the Kraiders Otaku Fridge, to Anime Okashi, until finally...simply the Otaku Fridge. Not that these tidbits are really important or remotely interesting...

The Otaku Fridge Network contains The Otaku Fridge Collective (this site), the Otaku Fridge Boards, and Hentai Neko (sold to a new owner early in 2007). The blue layout was designed by Skysenshi, while the orangey layout (Okashi's original, I must add) was by Firesenshi. The 2007 version of the Fridge, however, was based on an original skin called Phobus, which was created by Dugu and modified by Skysenshi to fit the anime-gamer theme. The site was powered by Wordpress.

The 2010 version, on the other hand, is Skysenshi's beefed up Web 2.0 remake of Firesenshi's 1997 Anime Okashi. Skysenshi made sure it stayed true to the original's feel while she re-arranged and re-designed it to accommodate several new dynamic elements. The content management system was also migrated from Wordpress to Blogger.

The Otaku Fridge is maintained and managed by Skysenshi.

More of the Fridge's history can be found at Skysenshi's portfolio site.

How does one become a contributor?
It's easy. Just post your review entry in this page (it won't hurt to introduce yourself also). The existing contributors and editors will then deliberate on it and if your entry is accepted, you will be added as a new contributor. We'll also set you up so that you'll be able to use our writing tools with ease.

What happened to Anime Okashi and Disc13?
They just went back to their original state -- as subsections of the Otaku Fridge. The only reason we bought separate domains back then was to divide the task among the senshi, with Firesenshi maintaining Anime Okashi, assisted by Thundersenshi, and Skysenshi maintaining Disc13 and Hentai Neko. Since Firesenshi is now very very busy with real-life concerns, and some baka stole our Anime Okashi domain (partly due to our negligence, prolly), Skysenshi had to take over the revival and maintenance of the anime section. Wouldn't it be easier to just stash 'em all again in one domain?

Why isn't my opinion posted?
We are still trying to verify the information in your commentaries by looking for the titles and watching them for ourselves. All of the anime and manga you've seen here were all watched, read, played and listened to by the staff of Okashi so we know if the information is correct or not. It will be a bit hard if the commentary says something like "Macross Plus came before Macross: Do You Remember Love" when that is not so. ^_^

My review was posted on Anime Okashi and/or the classic Otaku Fridge before, but it's not here anymore...
T_T It means that it was one of those files that we weren't able to rescue. Thunder, Fire, and Sky kept different copies of Anime Okashi, the latest one being with Fire. Unfortunately, her hard drive was stricken with the flu, just as the Anime Okashi domain got stolen. We were able to retrieve some of the files from an archiving site, but over 60 of those files still got lost. Yours may have been one of them.

If you have a copy of your review, we would gladly repost it.

The two other possibilities are: (1) We have not yet finished migrating your review from the classic Fridge to this new interface; and (2) your game review may not have been Japanese and all non-Japanese games are being transferred to Coolay.com (which has now been merged with skysenshi.com).
